A heartbroken community watched as it beached for the last time on Low Beach.<\/p>\n<p>It is especially appropriate for visitors to Nantucket\u2019s Whaling Museum to see a sperm whale. As Niles Parker, former NHA Robyn and John Davis Curator has said, \u201cthis is the whale that put Nantucket on the map. During the height of Nantucket\u2019s whaling era, men left the island in droves to hunt the sperm whale. It is because of this whale that the island enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most prosperous ports in America during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-20063\" src=\"https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-350x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-350x233.jpg 350w, https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/nha.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/889A1048-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a>Anchored beneath the dramatic whale skeleton the diminutive 28-foot whaleboat evinces the dangers of hunting the largest creatures on earth.\u00a0 Ours is a whaling-era boat, built in the late 19th-century in New Bedford.\u00a0 Whaleboats were built to be light, fast and maneuverable.\u00a0 The boat is equipped for efficient sailing, with a tabernacle to raise a mast and a centerboard.
