A Message from the Board President and Gosnell Executive Director<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a>As we reflect on 2024, our Summer of Sarg truly turned into the Year of Sarg, as the creativity and
\njoy that Tony Sarg represents was not only experienced within our featured exhibitions, but also throughout our educational and community programs, decorative arts workshops, and special events. An easy word to describe the year was \u201cfun\u201d and that was especially evident if you experienced the recreation of the Morton sea monster balloon down at Children\u2019s beach or spotted his footprints around town.<\/p>\n

We also completed and embarked on many vital restoration projects in 2024. This included intensive work on the Research Library on Fair Street, which re-opened in April. We began the early phases of a multi-year restoration project at the Old Mill, involving critically important repairs to both the structure and the historic mechanical components. It is paramount that we keep historic preservation at the forefront of our approach to this extremely rare and important building, so we are engaged in extensive historical research while assembling a team of preservation professionals to guide this exciting initiative. Both of these projects are generously supported, in part, by the Town of Nantucket\u2019s Community Preservation Committee.<\/p>\n

The year rounded out with another restoration project getting underway at the Hadwen & Barney Candle Factory, aimed at restoring the north brick wall. The project was a direct result of the important program we hosted for the past two years to help protect our historic landmarks from climate and disaster risks with the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), and Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc. (ICR). As the project began, we welcomed a new group of eleven working professionals from various countries around the globe, including Japan, Iraq, Spain, Kenya, Portugal, Australia, Kosovo, Saudi Arabia, Jamaica, and India. The main objective of the program included assessing climate risks to built heritage, developing appropriate monitoring and adaptation strategies, and building an international network of skilled professionals who are sharing similar work in their own countries.<\/p>\n

We were also proud to introduce a number of new programs throughout the year. Among them were the NHA Community Day, Sarg Celebration, and Mindful History: Sensory Saturdays, which delighted thousands of program attendees. In addition, we were glad to continue our summer benefit events Nantucket By Design, Baskets and Bubbly, as well as introduce A Nantucket Night, which raised critically important funds for the NHA\u2019s mission-related activities.<\/p>\n

Finally, throughout 2024, the board and staff were hard at work implementing a new strategic plan, positioning the NHA for success well into the future. By doing so, we seek to ensure sound operations while focusing on engaging a broader audience both in person and online, enhancing our collections stewardship, developing a holistic plan for the preservation and maintenance of our historic properties, deepening our financial and organizational strength, and continuing to shape our identity so that we better reflect and interpret the remarkable place that is Nantucket Island.
